John D. Warners Scholarship for Secondary Math Education
John D. Warners taught high school mathematics at Grand Rapids Christian High School for 37 years, during which time he also coached cross-country and track. John was a superb teacher and showed special patience for students who struggled in his classes, willingly devoting extra time and effort to help them learn. John was also devoted to racial reconciliation; he worked to promote and affirm cultural diversity in his neighborhood, school and church. This scholarship was established in John’s memory to encourage secondary math education students who share similar values.
Basic criteria:
- entering sophomore, junior, or senior year
- cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher
- pursuing a degree in the math secondary education program
- demonstrate leadership as well as special effort and commitment to learning and teaching
- financial need is considered
- preference will be given to students who show an interest in coaching. Preference will also be given to ethnic minority students.
Renewal criteria: Students who wish to be considered for renewal must file a new application each year and will be given equal consideration with other candidates.
