Phil and Marie Holtrop Chinese Student Scholarship

For a couple summers before retiring from the Religion Department at Calvin (in 1999) and several years afterwards, Phil Holtrop and his wife, Marie, taught in China, endeavoring to reflect God’s love to their students, to learn from them, and to be “agents of reconciliation” between two very different cultures. This scholarship is meant to assist Chinese students from mainland China who desire to enter Calvin at any class level and who are committed to building “cultural bridges” between China and the West.

Basic criteria:

  • entering freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year
  • international student (not from North America)
  • demonstrate excellent academic records, potential leadership and moral character
  • demonstrate a desire to return to China
  • demonstrate financial need
  • preference will be given to students with clear career goals who are majoring in liberal arts or humanities, but students with other majors may be considered as well

Renewal criteria: This scholarship is automatically renewable if the student continues to make satisfactory academic progress. Renewal is subject to funding availability.
