William R. Kenan Charitable Trust

The William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust was established in 1966 by William Rand Kenan. Mr. Kenan studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where his academic interests centered on mathematics and chemistry. He believed very strongly that education is not a static thing, but dynamic, involving the whole personality. A successful researcher, engineer, and businessman, Mr. Kenan’s career involved chemistry research, carbide manufacturing, plant management, real estate development, and a variety of other entrepreneurial interests.

The Kenan Trust reflects the interests of the donor. William Kenan believed “that a good education is the most cherished gift an individual can receive.” The Trust has chosen to emphasize private educational institutions, preferring to give a small number of substantial grants that make a real difference to the institution. In 1994, the Kenan Trust gave a major gift to Calvin College. To recognize the interests of the donor, an endowment was established which provides the William R. Kenan, Jr. Presidential Scholarships at Calvin College. Along with National Merit awards, presidential scholarships are the most prestigious offered at Calvin, traditionally awarded to those students who excel academically and demonstrate leadership ability.
