William H. Van Dyke Memorial Scholarship

William H. Van Dyke Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been established by Mrs. Janice Van Dyke of Oak Brook, Illinois in memory of her late husband, William, who passed away in November of 1993. Mr. and Mrs. Van Dyke met as students at Calvin in the fall of 1966 and were married during their senior year. They developed very close friendships during their four years at Calvin, relationships that have lasted a lifetime. Bill’s experiences in basketball with his friends and coaches were all part of his positive Calvin experience.
Bill was first diagnosed with cancer in 1978, and had it return in 1990. As he struggled with the disease, the events that had impacted his earlier life became fond memories. Calvin was one such influence. His love for the college and the leadership there led him to give and to serve the institution where and whenever possible. His love for God, students in general, Timothy Christian Schools, and giving were all wrapped up in the meaning and memory of Bill’s life.
One of the Van Dyke’s sons and a daughter-in-law graduated from Calvin in 1993, a second son and his wife graduated in June, 1995, and a third son began attend Calvin in the fall of 1995. Calvin is an important part of the Van Dyke family’s life. Sharing the privilege of giving to other students the opportunity to attend a college with the Christian academic environment that Calvin is well-known for would be Bill’s greatest joy. This scholarship is dedicated to his memory and all that held the most meaning to him.
