Peter and Mary Oppewall
Peter and Mary Oppewall have long believed that exposure to other cultures is a rewarding and enriching experience. They are establishing this scholarship for international students to bring more of the world’s cultures to Calvin’s campus so that all students may benefit and deepen their understanding and world views. The Oppewalls traveled and taught in China, Mexico, and the Netherlands. In China, Dr. Oppewall, a long-time Calvin English professor, taught literature to graduate students, and Mrs. Oppewall introduced undergraduates, many of them children of high-level officials, to American culture, customs, and conversation. The Oppewall children and grandchildren have also benefited from time spent in Spain, Ecuador, Nicaragua, as well as other travel around the world.
