Laurie Ellen Mervenne Urban Education Scholarship

Laurie Ellen Mervenne Urban Education Scholarship

Calvin College is committed to effectively prepare teacher candidates for work in urban schools. This focus on urban education responds to a variety of factors, including: an understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities that exist in urban schools; the necessity of preparing urban teachers who are culturally competent, equipped to utilize culturally responsive pedagogical practices, and able to cross borders of race, culture, and language; the desire to promote student achievement and meet the academic and emotional needs of students who have traditionally been under-served; the recognition of the shortage of highly trained and effective teachers in many urban communities; and the increased desire of Calvin’s teacher candidates to teach in urban environments. This focus on urban education is a direct result of Calvin’s commitment to promoting educational equity and justice.

Embracing these ideals and recognizing the need for qualified teachers in urban communities, Laurie Mervenne has established this scholarship to encourage teacher candidates to pursue their careers in a Christ-centered, educationally excellent environment at Calvin College to meet the needs of all learners.
