Pearl Van Dellen Education Scholarship

Kenneth Van Dellen, ’58, established this scholarship to honor his wife, Pearl (Kiel) Van Dellen. Pearl could afford only one year at Calvin when she attended in 1951-52. After leaving, she taught in the lower grades at Hudsonville Christian School, 1952-58, while taking evening and summer classes at Calvin and Hope. A move to teach at Kalamazoo South Christian School led her to take classes at Western Michigan University, where she met her future husband in the summer of 1958. This scholarship celebrates the Van Dellen family’s commitment to the field of education and Calvin University. Ken was also an educator who, after teaching junior and high school science for 5 years, taught college geology for 35 years and honored his parents with a geology scholarship at Calvin. The tradition of education at and support of Calvin continues with daughters Lisa Bremer, ’88, and husband Greg, ’87; Kara Doyle, ’90, a teacher married to John Doyle, also a teacher; and grandson, Ian Doyle, currently a junior education major at Calvin.
