Westveer Family Scholarship
Because the donors believe that the humanities play a vital role in developing liberal arts thinking and big picture problem solving, this scholarship is for a junior or senior student majoring in English. This discipline (along with history and philosophy) strengthens students’ ability to analyze and probe ideas, to understand historical and cultural contexts, to research relevant information, and to use the power of language to communicate effectively—all skills that will take them well beyond entry-level positions and serve them well in whatever career they choose to pursue. With all the emphasis on “getting a job” when graduating, it is important not to lose sight of the years that follow, when higher order thinking skills will make the difference in how and when the person rises within his or her occupation, is given additional responsibilities, or has the ability to transfer skills and insights to new opportunities.
