Helping Hand Scholarship

Howard Scholten attended Calvin College and had a life-long interest in helping the homeless. His family established this scholarship to honor his memory and to encourage social work students to pursue a career that supports this important segment of our society with Christian care and compassion.

Basic criteria:

  • entering junior or senior year
  • cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher
  • social work major
  • financial need is considered
  • first preference is for a student who has a career interest in serving the homeless. Special consideration will be given to those who have volunteered at Mel Trotter Ministries, God’s Kitchen or Degage Ministries.

Renewal criteria: Students who wish to be considered for renewal must file a new application each year and will be given equal consideration with other candidates.
