James and Mary Wieland Family Scholarship

James and Mary Wieland, both class of 1971, dedicate this scholarship to their parents who saw the value in Christian education and to the Christian College they attended, which was Calvin College. Three generations of their family have chosen Calvin as their alma mater. James is a member of the Centennial Dental Class at the University of Michigan. After receiving his D.D.S. degree, James established a private practice in family dentistry for 41 years on the southeast side of Grand Rapids. Dr. Wieland also served on the State of Michigan Board of Dentistry for eight years. Mary pursued an education in social work and served the residents of Holland Home in Grand Rapids for 25 years as a Volunteer Coordinator. The Wieland’s believe that not only is a solid Christian education important, but it is also important that young men and women are active in their church, committed to volunteering, and have a caring attitude to bring to their occupation. This scholarship will support students who reflect these qualities and are pursuing a career in either pre-dentistry or social work.

Basic criteria:

  • entering their sophomore, junior or senior year
  • cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher for pre-dentistry or a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher for social work
  • pursuing the pre-dentistry program or a social work major
  • financial need is considered, but not required

Renewal criteria: Students who wish to be considered for renewal must file a new application each year and will be given equal consideration with other candidates.
