William Randolph Hearst Foundation

William Randolph Hearst Foundation

The Hearst Foundation and the William Randolph Hearst Foundation were founded in the 1940s by publisher and philanthropist William Randolph Hearst. Mr. Hearst built a media empire which included the San Francisco Examiner and other newspaper, book, and magazine publications as well as television and radio broadcasting interest. The two foundations reflect the philanthropic interests of Mr. Hearst: Human services, education, health, and culture. Specific priorities include “programs to aid poverty-level and minority groups…and education programs with emphasis on private secondary and higher education.” As a result of these priorities, the two Hearst foundations have been instrumental in setting up endowed scholarships for minority young people at over 300 colleges across the United States. Calvin is privileged to be one of those institutions.
