Peter B. Northouse Family

Peter B. Northouse Family

The children of Peter B. and Jeanette H. Northouse, established this scholarship in honor of their parents because of their dedication to Calvin College and their interest in education in general.
Both of Peter and Jeanette graduated from Calvin (1927 and 1928), in fact it’s reported they fell in love travelling there from the Grandville/Jenison area by roadster. Both of them entered professions – Peter, medicine and Jeanette, education – but both maintained an interest in the liberal arts.
During the 1950’s the doors of their home were open to many Calvin students for housing, recreation, and Sunday dinners.
To date, all of their offspring, including four children and nine grandchildren, have attended Calvin.
Both of them served on the Alumni Council in the 1950’s and all of the children have been involved in alumni activities as either board or committee members. One son-in-law teaches at Calvin and one has served on the Board of Trustees.
Other educational interests of the Northouses included Grand Rapids Christian Schools, Children’s Retreat, and Wedgewood Acres. Encouraging seminarians and Christian school teachers was very important to them (Dr. Northouse frequently delivered their babies at no charge); and it was not uncommon for them to assist other parents with tuition for their children as well.
Because their parents were interested in excellent education for everyone, their children honor their memory by designating this scholarship for the average or above average student who demonstrates she/he is highly motivated as well as in financial need.
