Larry and Mary Jo Louters

Larry and Mary Jo Louters

This scholarship was established by Harley A. and Julia Janssen and their daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo and Larry Louters. Harley embraced his lifetime vocation as a Christian farmer in Ackley, Iowa and he and Julia clearly understood the value of Christian higher education for the next generation as they find their lifelong vocations. Mary Jo and Larry continued this legacy of Christian education and have made significant contributions to Calvin through their years of service in the education and chemistry departments respectively. Professor Louters is considered one of Calvin’s most-beloved professors, earning both the college’s Professor of the Year and Presidential Award for Exemplary Teaching. He is known as a caring teacher and a wonderful research mentor, leading research projects relevant to diabetes and cancer. He has initiated and directed summer Chemistry Camps for middle school students and local fifth graders who visit his annual spring “Chem Demos Program”. In honor of his retirement in 2018, Professor Louters’ family, friends, colleagues and students celebrate his many contributions to Calvin College through gifts to this scholarship.
