Jan and Nancy Treur Family

Jan and Nancy Treur Family

Jan and Nancy Treur, Class of 1963, have established this scholarship not only in gratitude for the excellent Christian education they received while at Calvin but also in appreciation for the education their four children, Rebecca, Melissa, Eric, and Laura, received as Calvin graduates. Both Jan and Nancy spent their professional careers working with high-risk, inner-city young people in the Grand Rapids Public School system. Nancy served for fourteen years as a reading tutor at the Waalkes Juvenile Detention Center, and Jan served for thirty-nine years at Central High School as a teacher and department chair in social studies, senior class advisor and director of student activities. Throughout their careers the importance of a Christian presence and influence in urban, public education among high-risk, inner-city students became very apparent to both of them. Consequently, they established this scholarship in response to this perceived need. The ideal candidate for this scholarship should be a junior or senior student with a 2.50 GPA or higher and in financial need. More importantly, the preferred candidate for this scholarship should have a strong desire to impact the lives of inner-city students as a Christian by committing to teaching in a public, urban, secondary school environment.
