Grace Dykstra Vellenga Family

Grace Dykstra was raised in the Roseland area of Chicago and attended Calvin for one year, 1929 1930. Because of the Depression she was not able to complete her degree program. Nonetheless, she maintained a keen interest in effective communications and was active in giving public readings and elocution instruction to private students.

After the untimely death of her husband, Bernard, Jr., in 1956, she returned to school as a non traditional student at age 45 and completed her associate degree in Speech Communication at Columbia College in Chicago. Subsequently, she served as co-hostess of the Home Hour on the Moody Bible Institute Radio Station (WMBI) in Chicago.

Grace Dykstra Vellenga was an active witness for Jesus Christ and frequently used her speaking skills in serving as a Bible class teacher and Bible study group leader. She continued to do so even in her retirement years in Florida.

This scholarship is established by Grace Dykstra Vellenga Hoven and her children, David B. and Ellen Bos Vellenga and Daniel R. and Cornelia Van Dorp Vellenga, to support a Calvin student desiring to integrate his/her faith with a career in communications.
