Cornelia Bratt
This scholarship for Social Work (BSW) majors was created in 1991 by Miss Cornelia “Connie” Bratt (‘36) who was one of the early group of Calvin alumni to enter the social work field. She held various positions in education and mental care hospitals in Michigan, Connecticut, and New Jersey prior to taking her Master of Social Work degree at the University of Michigan (’47). After working with the Red Cross both during and after her graduate school years, Miss Bratt joined the fledgling social work staff at Bethany Christian Home for four and a half years. She then was called to the staff at Pine Rest Christian Hospital and worked there for 16 years until her retirement in 1972.
Connie was motivated to provide this scholarship by her love for her profession, by her desire to help future social work professionals, and above all by her deep faith in God and her thankfulness to Him for the opportunities she has enjoyed in her chosen “helping” profession.
